DISCIPLINE Speech-Language Pathology TYPE Faculty

Brief Statement of Duties: Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, providing clinical supervision in the on-campus speech-language-hearing clinic, and contributing to research and scholarly activities leading to publication and external funding. Additional duties include active participation in departmental, university, and community service. Flexibility in teaching and supervision assignments is expected to meet evolving program needs. This is a campus-based position.


Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Master's Degree

Discipline/Degree Area: Communication Sciences and Disorders; Speech-Language Pathology

Required Specialized Training/Certifications: Master's degree in speech-language pathology; Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology; Michigan License in Speech-Language Pathology

Required Minimum Work Experience: 5 years of clinical experience in Speech-Language Pathology and/or teaching experience will be considered; Must meet ASHA requirements to provide clinical supervision to students.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:

  • Knowledge of human communication and swallowing processes and their disorders as outlined in the Knowledge and Skills Acquisition (KASA) summary by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill in the treatment and evaluation of communication and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and techniques used to provide speech-language pathology therapy and rehabilitation to children,       adults, and the elderly.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines for the delivery of speech-language pathology therapy and rehabilitation.
  • Sensitivity in handling confidential client information.
  • Oral and written skills essential to communicate with faculty, administrations, and external partners.
  • Writing skills adequate to secure external funding.
  • Collegiality in working collaboratively within the department and across disciplines.
  • Competence in interactions with external affiliate partners and regulatory/accrediting organizations.
  • Strong abilities in teaching and instruction of individuals and groups.
  • The desire to inspire and develop future professionals in the field of speech-language pathology and audiology.
  • The ability to teach and interact with students of all ages, ranging from freshmen to nontraditional students.
  • The ability to be flexible in teaching and supervisory assignments.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

  • University teaching experience.
  • Experience in a CAA accredited SLP graduate program.
  • Record of supervision in the clinical setting.
  • Experience in web-based teaching.
  • Expertise or strong interest in anatomy and physiology, speech science, or dysphagia/feeding is preferred; however, candidates with strengths       in other areas relevant to speech-language pathology will also be considered.
