IPE/IPP Information Exchange: Community-Based Pediatric Solutions

The IPE/IPP Information Exchange is a yearlong online learning event aimed at supporting faculty and programs interested in expanding IPE/IPP experiences for undergraduate and graduate students. Through speaker presentations, and opportunities for dialogue and connection, the IPE/IPP Information Exchange hopes to create a consistent and casual environment for faculty across multiple disciplines to connect, share ideas, brainstorm, and expand existing knowledge and research surrounding Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice. 

This IPE/IPP Information Exchange will focus on the development and integration of students in community-based pediatric clinics. 

Participants will be able to describe: 

  • Two methods for engaging students in an interprofessional pediatric experience 
  • Two ways to infuse pediatric curricula into a community clinic 
  • Two IPE outcome measures applicable to a community clinic


Speakers

Michelle L. W. Dawson, MS CCC-SLP, CLC 


Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, a speech-language pathologist with Midlands Therapy Services in Columbia, SC, and adjunct professor with the University of South Carolina, is the acclaimed host of “First Bite: Fed, Fun, Functional,” a weekly Speech Therapy Podcast that addresses “all thangs” Pediatric Speech Therapy which is presented by Speechtherapypd.com. Recently, Michelle authored “Chasing the Swallow: Truth, Science, and Hope for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders.” She is an accomplished lecturer; traveling across the nation delivering courses on best practices for the evaluation and treatment of the medically complex infant, toddler, and child with respect to their pediatric oropharyngeal dysphagia, pediatric feeding disorder, as well as language acquisition within the framework of Early Intervention. She volunteers with Feeding Matters and Dysphagia Outreach Project, has served as the Treasurer for the Council of State Association Presidents, is a Past President of the South Carolina Speech, Language, and Hearing Association, and a 2017 graduate of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Leadership Development Program, and a 2020 recipient of the Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Champion from Feeding Matters, a 2021 recipient of the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement from the South Carolina Speech, Language, and Hearing Association, a 2021 recipient of the State Clinical Achievement Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Foundation, and eight-time recipient of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s ACE Award for continuing education.

She is a current member of both ASHA , SCSHA, and the Dysphagia Research Society (DRS). Michelle volunteered with ASHA for the Pediatric Feeding Disorder planning committee for the ASHA 2022 Convention. She is also the Topic Chair for the Pediatric Feeding Disorder committee for the ASHA 2023 Convention 


Lisa Bowers, Ph.D., CCC-SLP


Lisa Bowers is an associate professor and Graduate Program Coordinator of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at the University of Arkansas. Her research focuses on the language and literacy abilities of children from diverse populations, including children with hearing loss and dyslexia. She is a member of several interprofessional research teams with scholars from Deaf Education, Counselor Education, Childhood Education, and Special Education that focus on communication access and best practices in Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Practice (IPP) in educational settings. She has experience working as a school-based SLP and currently coordinates service-learning programs in a variety of educational settings. Lisa enjoys spending time with her husband, Andy, and children, Jacob and Hannah, on the water.
